Interview Maya Weug

The F1 Academy season comes to an end this weekend in Las Vegas, a brand-new circuit that has never before appeared on the championship’s calendar. Ahead of this decisive finale, we spoke briefly with Maya Weug , one of the series’ standout drivers as she heads into one of the most important weekends of her career. Although she arrives in Las Vegas second in the standings, the title remains within her reach, and the final race of the season could still crown her as champion.

Maya Weug has rapidly become one of the most exciting young talents in international single-seater racing. Born on June 1, 2004, to a Belgian father and Spanish mother and raised in both the Netherlands and Spain, she carries a uniquely international background. Despite her diverse roots, Weug competes under the Dutch flag, proudly representing the Netherlands on the global stage.

Her passion for motorsport emerged early. After rising through the karting ranks, she made history in 2021 as the first female driver to join the Ferrari Driver Academy, following her victory in the FIA Girls on Track Rising Stars program. Since then, she has steadily progressed, combining composure, intelligence, and determination in every step of her career.

In 2023, she competed in the Formula Regional European Championship before moving into the F1 Academy. After racing for PREMA in 2024, she joined MP Motorsport for the 2025 season, continuing her development under the Ferrari umbrella. Within the F1 Academy, a championship created to elevate female talent, Maya quickly established herself as one of the most consistent and competitive drivers on the grid.

A Tight Championship Fight: Nine Points, Two Races, One Goal

Coming off a strong season last year, Maya’s 2025 campaign has been marked by speed, maturity, and resilience. Multiple pole positions, victories, and podium finishes have kept her firmly in the fight for the championship.

We have now arrived at the final race of the F1 Academy season, with a tight title battle between Doriane Pin and Maya Weug. Pin leads the standings by just nine points, leaving plenty of opportunity for Maya to still fight for the championship across the final two races. Both drivers are in their second year in F1 Academy, and while Doriane has scored slightly more points so far, Maya has also collected poles and wins throughout the season.

One of the defining moments of Maya’s year came in Singapore, where a bold last-lap overtake secured a crucial victory after an intense battle for the lead. Maya recalls it as one of her favorite moments of the season:

“The last lap was really cool.”

Now, everything comes down to the Las Vegas finale.
For this final round, Maya shared that she is

“Looking forward to win,"

adding that the last races have been really strong for her. Las Vegas, however, presents a new challenge, as it is a completely new track for her, a world she has never experienced before.

“I’m quite calm. The weekend itself will bring a lot of pressure to win the championship, but now I’m calm, all the preparations will be fine for Vegas.”

6th place → 8 points

Las Vegas scenario
Maximum points available: 39  (pole 3 + fastest lap 2 races × 1 + winning both races 25 × 2) Maya is 9 points behind → she can still win the title, but it depends on how Pin performs.

What Maya specifically needs to do:

  • Win at least one race, or finish both races on the podium with extra points for pole/fastest lap, depending on Pin’s results.
  • If Pin doesn’t score (e.g., DNF or finishes lower than 6th), Maya can clinch the championship with one win plus some extra points.

In simple terms: Maya needs to maximize her points and hope that Pin doesn’t score enough.
